Toussaint was the leader of the Haitian Independence Movement during the French Revolution; he emancipated the slaves and negotiated for the french colony. Toussaint was the son of an educated slave and acquired Jesuit contacts getting some knowledge of french but spoke and wrote the language terribly. He was finally freed from slavery in 1776 he married and had two sons.

Dessalines was enslaved in the French colony Saint Dominque and he served under the wing of Toussaint L'Ouverture.
after Toussaint was killed he became the emperor and gave the island the name Haiti in 1804. Later in the year he was killed in a revolt and was remembered as one of Haiti's founding fathers even though people did not like him.

Boukman was first enslaved in Jamaica then was moved to Haiti. On August 4th Boukman organized a meeting of slaves in the mountains of North Haiti and performed a Vodou ceremony. On August 22nd 1791 all of the slaves rebelled against the whites and killed them all. After they had defeated the whites they set the plantations on fire.
